When I was a visiting clinican at Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN I discovered that he was a real gentleman with respect to all colleagues. Though my affiliaton was not Neuropath his attitude was most encouraging supporting daily short encounters. He was an extraordinary figure both as a scientist and physician. I first met Dr Scheithauer after one of his brilliant lectures at the European Congress of Neuropathology in May 2008. I was immediately struck not only by his astounding knowledge and experience but also his infectious enthusiasm, humility and warmth. Consequently, I mustered up the courage to ask if I could spend some time in his department at the Mayo Clinic. I will always be grateful that I was given the opportunity to learn from such an amazing teacher and witness the great master at work. His outstanding diagnostic skills, clinical acumen and incredible work ethic was inspirational. I could barely keep up with him even though I was half his age!! The leaning towers of consults have to be seen to be believed!!! I will always cherish very fond memories of my time at the Mayo Clinic in early 2009. When it came to research, books and other publications, he was simply a "machine" with a dizzying number of projects on the go at any one time. Over the course of his 32-year Mayo career, he was the author of more than 750 peer-reviewed articles, 400 abstracts, 80 book chapters and 8 books. He has accomplished more in his 65 years than most of us mere mortals can dream of doing in two lifetimes! Despite all his achievements, he remained a humble, kind and generous man who so willing gave his time to mentor so many neuropathologists from all over the world. His passport was as thick as a phonebook! I feel so privileged that he was able to come to Australia last year to enthrall us with a brilliant series of lectures and slide seminars which over 200 pathologists from all over Australia and New Zealand attended. He loved Australia and its people. He had a deliciously naughty sense of humour which we Aussies get! Neuropathology has lost one of its legendary greats who can never be replaced. However, his legacy will live on in all those he has taught and his vast body of work. Words cannot express how much I will miss him. He will always have a special place in my heart and be remembered with much affection and respect. Rest in peace our beloved friend and teacher.
