I was born 3 weeks before he did his amazing feat. He has been with me all my life, a humble, down - to - earth Kiwi. He always commanded such respect, without ever wanting it.

The members of Fiji Club of New Zealand (FCNZ) and New Zealand Association of Accountants Inc (NZAA) and their families are profoundly saddened by the death of our greatest, humble and generous fellow New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary. Sir Edmund was and will remain part of our lives forever both to the young and old. On behalf of our members I convey our deepest condolences in this colossal loss to his family, our nation, and our thoughts and prayers are with them in these difficult times. I like to share a ballad written in 2007 by a nine year old girl Amanda Natasha Shameem as this is how we will all warmheartedly remember the great iconic Sir Edmund Hillary:- He was born in 1919 Sir Edmund Hillary is a man of great fame He started climbing when he was little Because he thought staying home was lame. When he was little he read adventure stories He read on into the night But since it was dark His sister gave him a fright He climbed Mt. Oliver in the Southern Alps it was very cold around him When he got down from the mountain The sky was a bit dim He went to Fiji and the Solomon Islands In a boating accident he was badly burned He came back to New Zealand And got the kindness he earned He climbed Mt. Everest He found it hard to breathe He stayed in a cave And survived the wintery breeze He is now on the five dollar note As happy as can be He remembers his time on Mt Everest As he sips his cups of tea. Edmund Hillary is the man with strong mixture of good qualities as modesty, practicality, simplicity and true self-sacrifice in helping the mountain people of Nepal. We feel numb at hearing his demise. You have opened up our eyes, Sir Ed.

Always climbing. Ed isn't gone, he's just gone climbing again. What other hero can you name that always had his home phone # listed in the phone book? What other celebrity spent his fame and fortune on others instead of himself? Some say he lived too modestly because of his generosity but they are wrong! His kindness and unselfish ways gave Ed a life fuller and richer than any "plastic" millionaire could ever dream of.He was a model and an insiration for all us. If all men aproached life as Ed did the world would lose a lot of things...war...hunger....ignorance...sickness...and intolerance to name a few. Goodbye for now Ed my friend. You left too soon...I still owe you a lunch!

I found out last night in Seattle Wa 1/10/08 I grew up on the East Coast of the us where all the boys had baseball hero's, not me. My hero was you . Sir Edmond Hillary. I read a book that was too thick for a 4th grader but the images on those pages have change my life to this day. Well done, good climb, we all stand on your shoulders. Your pace and the step you have cut will last forever. Cheers to you Mate. Bill Brosseau Seattle,WA

Sir Edmund Hillary is a great man. He inspires me since i was child made me choose to be adventurer as my dream. I began climb mountains at the age of 12 and he remains to be my role model. Through various adventure journey I made, I've learned to be a tough, resilient, brave man but still have care and compassion to other. Now I'm working as adventure-based educator and he still remain as my mentor. Sir Edmund Hillary and his best friend Tenzing Norgay will always live in my heart. I'll tell their story to my children and my grand son in the future that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay ever lived in this world and dedicate their best effort to the world. You will always be my inspiration, Sir. I'm sure that God provides you a beautiful place with Him. "Tapuaenuku"-The Step To God's Rainbow

I never had the priviledge of meeting Sir Hillary, but I feel the world has lost one of its greatest heroes. He accomplished one of the greatest feats of its time but he was humble and cared more about people than his accomplishments. I feel the loss, and I pray for his family.

In 2003 my son had to go to school dressed as someone from the 1950's for the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations. He went as Sir Edmund Hillary, and won! I took a photo and sent it to "Sir Edmund Hillary, Auckland, NZ". It reached him and he wrote back and sent my son his autograph. Rest in Peace Sir Edmund.

We were very fortunate to meet Sir Edmund Hillary at the Ross on Wye Literature festival in the UK several years ago where he was interviewed by Joe Simpson. It was a remarkable interview and Sir Edmund was extremely gratious and patient in answering questions and afterwards at the book signing where so many wanted to speak to him and shake his hand. Sir Edmund is true icon and role model - one of the greats of the 20th century.

He was someone who took his chance and went (probably)where no one had been before and went on to benefit the people of Nepal and persist with it despite personal tragedy. I saw and heard him at Hay-On-Wye Literary Festival (in Wales)a few years ago,but in his 80s' and he had great dignity and modesty, dealing tactfully with the Mallory-Irvine summit question. Not just a great achievement but someone with the human qualities to handle it and be such a good example to others. One of the names that stood out from my childhood and when the spirit of adventure counted above material gain. Has he a mountain named after him. He should have?

I am lost for words and I feel a little numb. Sir Ed was a man greater than the sum of his parts. For me he was bigger than Everest, bigger than his humanitarian work, he was quite simply what I as a New Zealander aspire to be. I was raised on his legend as a boy and I am still in awe of the man, yet I feel like I knew him even though we never shook hands. A great Kauri has fallen in the forest. You will be missed Sir Ed but always remain an inspiration. Farewell and Godspeed.

I have recently read the story of Sir Edmund and Tenzing's amazing exploits to Everest with my 6 yr old daughter, and it brought back wonderful memories of when I was first introduced to their amazing achievements as a child. A truly wonderful man, a great inspiration, and may he and Tenzing meet once again to explore the mountains of their own heavens. goodnight Sir and god bless. x

We have always been inspired by the things you have done. I was nearly called Hillary being born in 1953, but suddenly there were too many Hillary babies. We flew into Katmandu the day your wife and daughter died. All of Nepal were sympathising with you. We have fond memories of you planting a Nepalese magnolia in the West Lynn Gardens.
