Time may slip by us day by day but you are not forgotten cus. Today your memory stands forever in Dade City as a reminder to all what a great person you are and the sacrifice you made for us all. I can remember you, Kyle, and Josh helping Zack open his first birthday presents like it was yesterday. No memory stands more clear than that big boyish grin when I gave you a ride on Dad's tractor though. Never afraid to try something new. You would have loved your granddad as he never missed a chance to scare the wits outta me as a boy. What an awesome man he was. But you know that now as he's probably making up for lost time sharing those things with you now. You are among some great company of Dads & Granddads now. Enjoy their love as we did. You are loved, missed, and never forgotten Marcus.

It reads: "If there was a way I could catch, the thousand teard you have shed. I would gather them in my hands, place them on the grass to nourish with love, the place were your loved one lies. If I could bring light into your darkness of memories, I would bring a light of Faith and Rememberance, of a Fallen hero that stood for Freedom and Love of Country" this a painting I painted especially for Marcus Matthew's mother. A small thing I could do to let her know her son and his beliefs shall never be forgotten. GSMC (SW) Jose G Acosta United States Navy Chief D.A.V.

Had to pick the shooting Star for Jules. I know Jules through penpaling. We started writing in 2003. I do have a memory of Marcus (many through her letters). I talked to Jules on the phone a few times and one of those times I got to talk to Marcus. He seemed like such a nice person. I'm so glad he had Jules all these years to share his life with. They are simply perfect together, no other way to put it. I wanted to THANK him for all he did for my freedom. God Bless him! And his FAMILY! <3

Julia was one of my best friends in high school. I always found myself looking up to her because her how beautiful i thought she was and the personality to match. I still find myself looking up to you jules. The strength that you've shwon through this tragedy is truly admirable. I remember when Marcus and Julia first started dating. You really felt like you were in the presence of true love. Jules face would just light up at even just a mention of marcus' name. Marcus seemed so comfortable, safe and happy when they were together. In each others arms they just seemed as if they felt home. I hope that julia and Marcus' family and friends can find comfort in knowing that he is not only with our lord and watching over us, but that he will be forever remembered as the selfless Hero with a gourgeous smile and an undying love for his wife, friends and family.

I never really met Marcus but I feel like I knew him through Heather, Jules sister. I cried when I heard the news. It is painful to see a great soldier, husband, brother, and friend be taken away from all who love him. I am proud of Jules for holding up so well but I know that she is torn. I saw pictures of Marcus and I have to say that he has always had a bright smile and a contagious grin. Heather does too and so I just wanted to say that Marcus will be missed even by those who never had the opportunity to actually meet him in person. I send the family my prayers and hugs. I shall Honor these brave soldiers and their sacrifices forever.

I am incredibly sorry to say that I never got to meet Marcus. I browsed Julia's myspace page regularly, though, and I've seen oodles of photographs of him and of the two of them together. I have also heard Chuck and Lynda, his in-laws, rave about him. The first time I watched Julia's OIF 2007 video, I was in tears because it was so touching. I remember watching it twice in a row because I thought it was such a sweet, loving tribute to her husband. I was instantly charmed by Marcus' mega-watt smile and by his obvious adoration of Julia. I always imagined future family get-togethers with all of us hugging, talking, and laughing together. It's just so hard to believe he's gone.

Marcus was a very respectful young man. Whenever I saw him, he had this contagious smile on his face. This smile radiated from the inside out. Him and Jules were such a free sprited couple that always brought a smile to my face when I saw them. Jules my prayers are with you and your family. I pray that God will continue to pour out the oil of joy for your mourning and that he will continue to comfort you during this time. I thank God for the opportunity of meeting you all. God bless you.

Marcus and Jules, went on a double date with my and my ex boyfriend Jeff. We went to the florida fair, for a while anyway. He had a great sense of humor, and absolutely adored Jules. I am so sorry for your loss, and if there is anything I can do, please let me know. He was a good man and a good friend. I didn't know him well, I haven't truly talked to him in like 7 years, but what I did know of him was that he was an exceptional human being, and he truly loved Jules with all of his heart, just as she does him! God bless, Misty

I first met Marcus and Jules when I left AIT and went to my first duty station, Fort Polk. I was scared, didn't know anyone and just wanted some people to talk to. My sister introduced me to this insanely awesome couple, the Mathes Family! The one thing that always always ALWAYS pops into my head when I think of Marcus is his smile. I can't imagine him without that big grin. Really there are no words to express how sorry I am for this loss but I am so thankful to God for giving me the chance to meet such awesome people. Marcus, you are a true hero to us all. May you rest in peace.

I met Marcus and Jules when Heather was teaching at North Polk Elementary. I was Heather's Teachers Aide last year. I will never forget when I seen Marcus and Jules. Marcus had this smile that could light up a room and you could tell that he really loved Jules. I remember us all just hangin out in the room talkin and laughin. Marcus just seemed like he had a way of making people smile even when they felt like they were down on their luck. Even though I only got to spend just a little time with them they will always have a place in my heart and I will always remember his smile. You guys are in my prayers and thoughts. We love you all and Marcus is watching over you all. A true HERO.

i can see it, just like it was yesterday... it was black friday, the weekend before the guys left and i ran into marcus and jules at walmart. i had escaped the house and aaron needed electricial tape to mark his duffle bags. like an army wife who had no clue, i was grateful to have run into you guys. i remember marcus being super helpful. it's so surreal... now when i go back to leesville, i'll be looking for guys down every row waiting for y'all to point me in the right direction. now marcus will have to guide me from heaven and jules will have to show me from here. you will be in our thoughts and prayers, all of you.

Sgt. Marcus Mathes attended school in Sebring until he moved to Dade City to live with his father for his high school years. He died April 28, 2008 in Iraq, he was 26 I think.

I have never seen such peace on Marcus' face as when he returned from Afghanistan and was able to find sweet Julia in the crowd. An example of his love for his wife.
