Anita Roddick - I have a photo of you on my vision board with your arms wrapped around kids in what looks like a school in India- you looked so alive, vivacious and passionate! I then picked up your book "Body and Soul" in a second hand bookstore. Anita you have inspired me.. inspired me to be in business, inspired me with your beauty and wildness at the same time.. you dared to be bold, be truthful and yet so grounded. Thank you for allowing me to see that business can be used as a force for good - spiritual business. Lots of love.. Nadhira.

Anita was an inspiration. She built a bridge between 'green' ideology and business. Essential for this planets future. Anita was years ahead in her thinking and ACTIONS. I travelled to London from Australia in 1990 and had the opportunity to work for the Shop. It was a fun time and the company did actually live up to my expectations. We even had fair trade organic coffee in the staff room... 18 years ago! I extend warm wishes to Anita's family. To her daughters in particular. Peace! - Kym

Anita Roddick inspired me to become a business owner. She taught me to do it with kindness and strength and to be a concientious supporter of the planet and its people all the while. She is forever one of my greatest heros. I thank her soul for its bravery in teaching the world to stand up and shout out loud the truth of the human soul. She was and will always be a blessing in my life and though I never had the honor of meeting her I love her dearly. Thank you Anita for being beautiful, incredible you.

Anita stayed with us several times when in the US. Living the the midwest, at one time we had a cornfield right up against our property line. Anita awoke one morning and insisted, absolutely insisted that we all go out and sing the theme song from "Oklahoma" (the musical) to the corn. And, of course, we did...and laughed and laughed.

CELEBRATE ANITA!!!!! ANITA LOVED QUOTES. THIS ONE IS BY EMILE ZOLA THE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH NOVELIST “I AM HERE TO LIVE OUT LOUD!!!” I CAN’T THINK OF ANYONE MORE SUITED TO THIS QUOTE THAN ANITA RODDICK MY NAME IS JENNY PHILLIPS AND I AM HERE WITH MY HUSBAND JOHN TO CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF ANITA. WE HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING THE FRANCHISEES OF THE BODY SHOP IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA AND OVER THE LAST 21 YEARS WE WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO MEET ANITA SEVERAL TIMES. WHENEVER I MEET PEOPLE AND I TELL THEM WHAT I DO, INVARIABLY THEY ASK IF I HAVE MET ANITA. WHEN I TELL THEM “YES QUITE OFTEN” THEY ARE COMPLETELY AWESTRUCK AND AMAZED THAT SOMEONE SO WELL-KNOWN AND SEEMINGLY REMOTE FROM EVERYDAY LIFE WOULD ACTUALLY BE ACCESSIBLE. OF COURSE THE NEXT QUESTION WAS ALWAYS “WOW!! WHAT’S SHE LIKE?” TO WHICH MY REPLY WAS ALWAYS “SHE’S QUITE SIMPLY THE MOST AMAZING PERSON I’VE EVER MET!!” WHICH WAS COMPLETELY TRUE. SHE WAS AMAZING. I WOULD TELL THEM OF HER INCREDIBLE ENERGY, INTELLECT AND HUMOUR. IT ALWAYS ASTOUNDED ME THAT YOU COULD PRESENT ANITA WITH A DILEMMA AND SHE WOULD COME UP WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, DELICIOUS AND LEFT FIELD WAY OF DEALING WITH IT. YOU COULD HEAR THE COGS TURNING. AND IT WAS ALWAYS SO ORIGINAL OF COURSE, YOU IMMEDIATELY WANTED TO DO IT. AND YOU WISHED YOU WERE BRAVE ENOUGH TO MAKE IT HAPPEN. SHE WAS ALWAYS THINKING AND TALKING AND CHALLENGING YOU TO BE BOLDER, BIGGER, MORE ADVENTUROUS, MORE KIND AND MORE CREATIVE THAN YOU THOUGHT POSSIBLE. SHE WAS ALWAYS AFTER THAT POINT OF DIFFERENCE THE OTHER THING THAT FLOORED PEOPLE WAS HER SIZE. EVERYONE EXPECTED HER TO BE 6FT TALL, AN AMAZON, BECAUSE THAT WAS HER PERSONA. WHEN I WOULD TELL THEM THAT SHE WAS BARELY 5FT TALL THEY WOULD BE ASTONISHED. THEY EXPECTED HER TO BE BIG. WHICH OF COURSE SHE WAS. SHE WAS A BIG HUMAN BEING. IN EVERY WAY. YESTERDAY I LOOKED AT ANITA’S WEBSITE AND SAW GORDON HAD WRITTEN THAT ANITA WOULD HAVE LOVED PEOPLE TO TELL RISQUE STORIES ABOUT HER. WELL HERE’S MINE! ANITA VISITED US ON APRIL 26TH 1989 – WE WERE VERY SMALL THEN, ONLY 2 STORES. AFTER DRIVING HER AROUND FOR MOST OF THE DAY SHE TURNED TO ME AND SAID “WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO HAVE BABIES?” I WAS A LITTLE TAKEN ABACK THAT SHE WAS SO DIRECT, BUT REPLIED “I’VE BEEN TRYING TO GET PREGNANT FOR AGES BUT IT HASN’T HAPPENED YET” TO WHICH ANITA REPLIED “WHAT YOU DO IS YOU HAVE SEX, THEN AFTERWARDS YOU STAY ON YOUR BACK FOR ½ AN HOUR WITH YOUR LEGS IN THE AIR!!” OKAAAAY I SAID, A BIT SHOCKED THAT I WAS GETTING THIS ADVICE FROM THE FOUNDER OF THE BODY SHOP (APPROPRIATE REALLY!!!!). SO I FOLLOWED ANITA’S ADVICE AND 9 MONTHS AFTER THAT VISIT I HAD A BEAUTIFUL BABY BOY! THANKS ANITA FOR TEACHING ME HOW TO GET PREGNANT!! ANITA LIKED BEING AGGRAVATING AND IRREVERANT IF SHE THOUGHT THAT GOOD WOULD COME FROM IT. I REMEMBER GOING TO A BUSINESS FORUM IN MELBOURNE ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO. SHE HAD BEEN INVITED TO SPEAK AT A LEADERS FORUM, AND THEY HAD PAID ALL HER EXPENSES AND A FEE (WHICH OF COURSE SHE DONATED). WE SAT IN THE GREEN ROOM BEFORE IT WAS HER TURN TO SPEAK. ANITA TOLD US THAT SHE WAS GOING TO TELL THESE 2000-ODD MEN-IN-SUITS WHAT UNCONSCIONABLE PRICKS THEY WERE. AND SHE DID. FOR THE FIRST 5 MINUTES. SHE GAVE IT TO THEM WITH BOTH BARRELS. AND THEN FOR THE NEXT 30 MINUTES SHE COMPLETELY CHARMED THEM. SHE TOLD HER STORY. OF HOW SHE STARTED IN BUSINESS. OF HOW SHE VIEWED THE COSMETICS INDUSTRY (“IT’S ONLY A FACE-CREAM, NOT THE BODY AND BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST!”). OF HOW SHE RAN HER BUSINESS IN AN ETHICAL AND HUMANE WAY. AND SHE GOT A STANDING OVATION. NOT FROM EVERYONE, BUT FROM MOST OF THEM, AND I LIKE TO THINK THAT THOSE PEOPLE WENT AWAY AND MADE A DIFFERENCE TO HOW THINGS WORKED IN THEIR OWN BUSINESSES. I THINK WHAT I LOVED MOST ABOUT ANITA WAS HER HUMANITY. SHE CARED ABOUT EVERYONE. SHE PLAYED IT BIG ON THE WORLD STAGE, TAKING ON PROJECTS THAT WOULD SCARE MOST PEOPLE, MAKING THEM HAPPEN, MAKING THEM RELEVANT. YET SHE COULD CONNECT CLOSELY WITH PEOPLE ONE-ON-ONE. SHE SPOKE TO THEM AS IF THEY WERE HER BEST FRIEND. THE STAFF LOVED HER. EVERYTIME SHE VISITED SHE WOULD INJECT HUGE ENERGY INTO THE BUSINESS. SHE CAME TO MY HOME FOR DINNER AND PLAYED WITH MY CHILDREN AS IF SHE WERE THEIR GRANDMOTHER. SHE WAS AN INCREDIBLY WARM HUMAN BEING WHO HAD A COMPLETE PASSION FOR PEOPLE. AND SHE WAS COMPLETELY AUTHENTIC ABOUT IT ANOTHER QUOTE. “IT IS NOT GIVEN US TO LIVE LIVES OF UNDISRUPTED CALM, BOREDOM AND MEDIOCRITY. IT IS GIVEN US TO BE EDGE-DWELLERS.” I THOUGHT THIS WAS VERY ANITA. WHENEVER WE SAW ANITA SHE WAS LIKE A WHIRLWIND THAT FLASHED THROUGH OUR LIVES, ALL TOO QUICKLY AND THEN LEFT US FEELING LIKE SOMETHING HAD SHIFTED AND THE WORLD WOULD NEVER QUITE BE THE SAME AGAIN. NOW THAT SHE HAS LEFT US FOREVER, I FEEL THIS IS EVEN MORE TRUE. THANKYOU ANITA FOR LETTING ME PLAY A PART IN YOUR LIFE. THANKYOU FOR BEING ONE SUCH AN INSPIRATION THANKYOU FOR BEING SUCH AN AWESOME HUMAN BEING. THANKYOU FOR LIVING OUT LOUD!!

growing up in brighton i remember seeing the first body shop open, and how funny it was being sited in between two funeral palours. everything you did you did with great passion, energy, joy and above all humour. Just because something was worthy didnt mean it had to be sour faced.

Being a clerk at The Body Shop in Georgetown, Washington, DC was my 1st "real" job. It was 1993 and was a college freshman. Along with my application for employment, I was also given a cardboard square and told to make something out of it and bring it with me to my interview. I made a purse with little flowers on it. I got the job. My experience there was such a positive working environment, and I'm lucky to have started out in a company like this. When so many people have horrible first work experiences, I feel lucky that I had the opportunity to work in an environment that was professional, but warm and was a model of business ethics, tolerance and a commitment to fairness. Although I never met Dame Anita and she never knew me, I feel grateful to her for the part she played in my life. (Sorry this is so long). With Deepest Sympathy and Much Respect-

I only this evening found out about Dame Roddick's passing. The memory I have of her work, was that until 15 years ago or later, my hometown, Albuquerque didn't have a Body Shop. I did alot of traveling with my job, but always carried a spare 80 dollars ago to come back with my Body Shop Booty. Well, Albuquerque has grown, we now have the shop, but since Anita left the company, it hasn't been the same. I enjoyed her warmth, her passion and her foresight. What an incredible woman! I met Anita Roddick last year when I was working on an MA project which needed to be idealistic but grounded in the real world. The kind, helpful advice Anita offered enabled me to do this, and my project is now out there, making people's lives better on the island of Mauritius. Grateful thanks, Anita!

I had occasion to meet Ms.--Dame Roddick when she set up her central offices for The Body Shop, here in New Jersey. My wife had started working for the company and we were invited to the Christmas party, that year. Anita, as everyone called her, was a phenomenal hostess! She danced with virtually everyone in attendance that night, with complete child-like abandon. It was obvious that she dearly loved the people she worked with and was thrilled every day to lead her company and espouse her philosophy. My wife and I really did love her for the person she showed herself to be. I will miss this truly great, passionate, woman...!

I have been fortunate to work with her on two projects over several years. Her mark is multi-fold, in order of importance: 1. Enterprise can be a decent, honourable and noble pursuit, just as being a lawyer, doctor, civil servant. One can indeed serve one's country and the world, through enterprise. 2. Women are different in business, as Muhammad Yunus proved with Grameen in micro-credit. Women can run enterprises with values, ethics and care, thus setting a unique example to young, aspiring women and men. 3. Business can be fun, vital, passionate, humorous, friendly, loving, characteristics which the world always needs and certainly the business world. 4. As social organizations, businesses can be a vehicle to enhance "life chances" in a way which few other institutions in society can. 5. She was the mother, sister and supporter of many of us in the socially responsible business world, long before it was fashionable to be so. She was a true pioneer who inspired and rekindled thousands of other. I can't think of another entrepreneur with such a record. We will miss her terribly.

It is said that some are just too good for this world. I am sure that proverb was written for Anita Roddick. I have followed her good deeds and philathropic works for many years. As well, I have been a faithful Body Shop customer and have enjoyed wonderful products created from crafters from villages worldwide. May the memory of this beautiful, caring woman be a blessing to us all. She will be missed.

Having followed your career since the first Body Shop opened, I am saddened by your passing. Thank you for being an inspiration to other women, & caring about our planet with your business practices & attitude to third world country workers. May I offer the family my sympathy. Feel justly proud of her. Jennifer McGirr. Tenerife.

Although I never had the pleasure to meet Anita, she was definitely an inspiration for me as I strive to follow her footsteps to make a difference in this world. I’ve been shopping at The Body Shop ever since I could remember. In fact, I just went last weekend to buy a gift for a friend. She will be greatly missed, and I would like to express my condolences to her family and closest friends for their loss. Anita, we will always remember you.

You are a great light in the world of shallow materialism. You are 20 years ahead of your time in business ethics and recycling. You are the first woman who practiced ethical sourcing and recognising indigenous knowledge. You believe in charity, and you are a true philanthropists who love the disadvantaged around the world. You will be remembered as a great person of beauty, beyond skin-deep. We shall remember you indeed and may your legacy live on.

I worked for the Body Shop in Sydney (Australia) in 1986, as an impressionable 18 year old! I'll never forget the thrill of the night she actually came to visit our store, and chatted to us over drinks. It's amazing to think that someone had so much vision, and I'll always have in my mind her enthusiasm and zest for what she believed in. My thoughts are with her loved ones at this difficult time, she was indeed very special.

I met Anita in Chicago in 2005. I was working at the time for The Body Shop. She was such a lively spirit and I loved her stories she told. We had dinner and she sat and told stories of her life experiences and just told them the way it was. Very unedited. I loved it. Then we spent time with her the next day and she was once again lovely, spirited, and a true gem. I was sad to hear of her passing but thought about when I met her and the kind of person she was. I don't know everything about Dame Anita but I was truly touched just to have met her.
