Dear Bob, Though. I do not know you in person, I came across to your vocal exercises on Spotify three days ago and followed your instructions and steps and completed all your exercises. I now learned how to relax my tongue, chin, jaws, shoulders, neck - the entire body and my voice colour has changed tremendously. There's no more tightness. My breath support can now connect well with my voice. My voice is now bright, fresh and forward. The transition notes from chest to head register have also turned to be more evenly and smoothly now. I owe this to you! A BIG THANKS to you Bob. Your exercises and instructions will be used forever and ever. THANK YOU! I will always have you in my heart and memoir.

I HAVE JUST RETURNED TO AUSTRALIA HOW SAD TO HEAR THE NEWS BOB HAS PAST. I HAVE SUCH FOND MEMORIES OF DEAR BOB AND THE HIGHEST RESPECT FOR HIM. HE WORKED WITH ME WHEN I FIRST MOVED TO SYDNEYy ... HE CONTINUED THE TRAINING I HAD STARTED AS A YOUNG GIRL IN PERTH … WITHOUT ANY FRIENDS BUT MANY SINGING OPPORTUNITIES, BOB WAS ALWAYS THERE WITH HIS LOVELY SOFT SPIRIT AND READY WITH A LAUGH! ALWAYS CARING, ENCOURAGING AND EXCITED FOR MY PROGRESS, HE GUIDED ME TO HIS MENTOR IN LONDON, FLORENCE NORBERG. I ALWAYS FELT I HAD A LOVING AND AFFECTIONATE BOND WITH BOB ,NO MATTER HOW MUCH TIME PASSED BETWEEN VISITS. REST IN PEACE BOB, I'M SURE YOU ARE STILL SHARING YOUR GIFT WHEREVER YOU ARE NOW. YOU HAVE LEFT SO MANY FOND MEMORIES AND SUCCESS STORIES FROM YOUR WONDERFUL WORK AND TIRELESS GIVING, AND I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU. I AM GRATEFUL FOR OUR TIME TOGETHER AND CONTINUE CONSTANTLY WITH THE APPLICATION OF YOUR WONDERFUL TEACHING

I'm an Aussie living in Nashville and touring all over. I just now (Nov 11th) Googled him as my CD (transferred from cassette tape) is old and jumping and I wanted to order a new one. What a sad revelation to learn he has passed. I have such fond memories of many lessons with Bob, in Sydney. His voice is always in my head when I sing and sometimes I wonder "What would Bob say?" when a particular part needs attention. Bob's teaching changed my voice, my singing and my self. He has truly left a legacy of joy.

This is one of the last exercises on the vocal exercises cd which Bob gave to me back stage at the Spiegletent in Brisbane many years ago when he was up from the Gold Coast to see my performance of "Intimate and Deadly". I warm up religiously to Bob and attribute my vocal health and fitness to having this routine in my life every single day. I am so used to hearing Bob's voice guide me through the nearly one hour session from the beginning of the cd to the end and I'm very glad that I'll have this long after his passing. I only heard about the news days ago and send my deepest sympathy to all family, relatives, friends and loved ones... This wonderful teacher will be sadly missed.

Christine Anu 05/10/2010

Hi Christine. Thank you for that lovely tribute. A tribute facebook site has been set up for Bob and it is http://www.facebook.com/bobtasmansmith Bobs funeral was a lovely affair and there was a memorial held in Sydney last Friday for those who could not attend the funeral. See www.selticsirens.com for Bob's effect. His tape was the only training Tahlia & Ingrid used for the years through their eisteddfods, competitions, and since, before their performances in Australia and Overseas. He used to ring them for updates, and was sent their CDs over the years. Another good one has gone!

In the mid '70s Bob was one of the three teachers I saw weekly when I wanted to sort out my technique. It only took a couple of months for me to decide that Bob was the one who would sort things out quickest so I dropped the others and we had a wonderful couple of years of lessons before I was offered a full time position with Opera Australia. Our lessons and friendship continued and as I added teaching to my schedule and became involved with ANATS we became colleagues. I still base my and my students' warm-up on the exercise sheet he passed on from his teacher Florence Norberg. Bob will remain an influence on me and, I believe, many of his other students and continue to be the shining example of a man of great integrity, sensitivity, good humour and generosity of spirit. He has been missed in Sydney for some years but his spirit will live on for generations as the many singers and teachers he influenced continue to employ and pass on his special brand of wisdom.

I was a student of Bob's for quite a few years. He knew from the start that I had something. Bob made me believe in myself and I owe him my life as a singer. I remember doing my vocal warm ups in his living room as we worked through the lesson and every now and then he would stop the scale to tell me a funny joke or story. We had some great times. I have always had bad language and Bob use to laugh so much when I would tell a story that I was passionate about becuase I would use bad lanuage and it would crack him up. I will miss you Bob you are the greatest mentor I will ever have and I will never forget you. R.I.P

We first met Robert (Bob) whilst he was a Stock Broker in Gosford during the seventies. He was an active member of the Gosford Rotary club. During those years we spent many memorable times with Bob – upon his move to Sydney he would often come and stay with us at Terrigal. Since his relocation to the Gold Coast, we would again catch up with him on our frequent visits to this area – and will miss him, particularly on our next visit later this month. Sadly missed. I met Bob in the 80's, a meeting that would result in a friendship that spanned more than 20 years. Bob was caring, inspirational and honest beyond measure; you could rest assured that you would get a clear answer from him for he always told the truth in love. He gave, he laughed, he sang, he loved and he always had a way of making us feel special and valued. My husband, Tony and I recognised the 'gift' of Bob's friendship for what it was - something very special, not given lightly. We are so grateful to have had him in our lives. September began with me losing my beloved sister; it ended with me losing a beloved friend. I am so grateful that in this life, we lose many things, but our memories are ours to keep. I will keep the memories of my sister , Jerry and my 'Brother' Bob forever kindled in my heart. They will light the way, bringing a smile and filling my heart with warmth on those cold and gray days when reality sets in to remind me that they are no longer here with us. Rest in peace, dear Bobby, dear friend and brother. Tony and I loved you. You will be sadly missed. Thanks for bringing so much to our lives. Blessings and love, Francine

I still remember meeting Bob in the 80's, a meeting that resulted in a friendship that spanned more than 20 years. Bob was my mentor, my vocal coach and a friend to me and my husband, Tony. He was always so loving, always made me feel that I was special and that I mattered. He honoured Tony and me with a friendship that we both recognised as something very special. September has been a month of partings for me: I lost my favourite sister to cancer on the 11th of September and triends on the 17th and 27th. Now, I've lost Bob, too...However, I can honestly say, that in spite of this sad outcome, the gift of knowing and loving Bob Tasman-Smith will always outweigh the sadness and grief of his loss. Rest in peace, dear Bobby, dear friend. You were and always will be loved. Love from Tony and me, Francine Bell-Mills

Dear Bob, I met you just over 30 years ago... I will remember that meeting forever. You didn't know if you could change the way I sang, but you did not only that - you changed the way I thought as well... A true frienship lasts forever and yours has certainly remained a true and loyal one. I hope that you will rest in perfect peace now and that the many people you have helped will always remember the special magic that was you. With love Rhond

We met Bobby in 1967 at the studio of Florence Wiese-Norberg in Baker Street where we were all pupils together. We remember with such pleasure the Master Classes and in particular Bob singing How are things in Glocca Morra. The richness and sincerity of his baritone voice will be long remembered. In the 1970's when Bob returned to Australia and we began working the Cruise Liners we would meet up in Sydney with Max and Joan, Heather Begg ,Aylene Fisher, and other musical colleagues for lovely evenings of music and chat. We salute Bob for his technical knowledge and tutoring of the voice and thank him for the refresher lessons I had with him of the Norberg technique. Although we have not seen Bob since 1997 we have kept in touch by phone and email and always enjoyed the musical and humorous emails he sent. A 40 year friendship is at an end but the memories will last for ever., God bless. Keep making music Bobby.John & Margot

It was wonderful to attend the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing (ANATS) presentation to you last year where your contribution to singing and to the singing teaching community was recognised with a certificate awarded for your “foresight, commitment and contribution to vocal artistry and to the teaching of singing in Australia”. This is an outstanding legacy. With my love, Di

From the moment I first met Bobby at our first lesson in the sea side suburb of Miranda in Sydney, I realised this was a very special man. Bob you have touched the lives of so many wonderfully talented performers and singers, and helped them to reach their true potential. There will never be anyone else like you and the music industry has lost a very valuable friend. You will continue to live on in our hearts and through our voices as you have made the world a better place. I will miss you greatly Bobby and I will never forget the wonderful times we shared together when you came to visit me recently in Perth WA. Now the Angels in heaven will sing better than ever before, they will never have a better teacher. Thank you Bobby for being such an inspiration in my life and the lives of all who knew you. Bob came into my life as my boss at the Stockbroking Firm McFadyen and Co. in 1970, when they had opened an office in Gosford. For three years, he was the most considerate boss any secretary could have. From then on we were just friends - close friends, who shared each others life and families. My children and I learned so much from him - respect, dignity, humour and compassion, apart from the proper use of the English language, Thank you, Bobby, and I am glad I was there the last full day of your life. I am so sad you are no longer with us but am so happy that nothing can hurt you any more. You have been a wonderful friend, teacher, confidante, mentor and inspiration. Your spirit will continue to be so. As I wrote these words, tears flowed down my cheeks, and I know that you would not want that. You have ...touched and inspired more people than you could ever realise. "For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun? And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing. And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb. And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance." [Kahlil Gibran - The Prophet]

I'd known Bobby for at least 15 years and, as CEO of the Sydney Eisteddfod, I rallied his help in organising workshops for young cabaret singers - something he took great pleasure in doing. We would spend hours on the phone talking about singing, the opera and his very wonderful career , both onstage and behind the scenes helping so many singers with their voices , and after my stroke he helped me resurrect vocal strength. I'll miss our chats, and our laughs, Bobby, dignified to the end, you was ready for this, even if we weren't! Cheers, my friend, Geoff

I have been associated with Bob for the past 10 years and in this time, I have gotten to know Bob very well. My dealing with Bob were to manage his finances and more often then not our conversations would stray to his incredible past. From when he was a stockbroker to his life in the theatre. Bob had a great gift of story telling and we would have numerous conversations enlighting me on his travel, his experiences and the people who he knew in his private and working life. I knew when I spoke to Bob it wasn't going to be a 5 minute conversation but it was always an enjoyable discussion. My life has been enriched by me knowing Bob and I trust that he is now giving the angles singing lessons. Sadly miss - Stephen

There are no words I can find to express my COMPLETE gratitude and affection for you. You KNOW I am eternally grateful and forever in your debt……Everything I am -... I owe to you. Over the past 20 years I have been honoured to share such a wonderful friendship - and furthermore, such an amazing and unforgettable journey with you.. My heart breaks so awfully.. So much of my soul has died today - and the world has lost the most beautiful human being ever to walk this earth. I met Bob in February 1999 when I came down to Sydney from Singapore to take up voice lessons. It was a stressful and confusing time in my life and my 4 months spent in Sydney was an effort to recharge and refocus. Bob was one of the people who made me feel so at home. More importantly, he made me feel special. I was inspired by how he lived life to the fullest. Even though he battled cancer in his later years, he was always grateful for each day that he lived. He had a lovely and sometimes wicked sense of humour. Bob loved Singapore and I thank God he was able to visit me here a few years ago. It was the last time I saw him. We kept in touch on Facebook and even in words, he was the same sprightly spirit. He will always have a place in my heart, and I will miss him dearly. Rest in peace, dear friend.
