Bobby was basically a tragic figure, but he was the greatest player ever to have walked this earth. We will always love him and remeber him with forgiveness. May he rest in peace.

As an avid chess fan I attended the 1972 Championship match in Iceland. Fischer when he finally showed up was simply devastating . Spassky crumbled and it seemed to be the end of the Soviet dominance. Chess suddenly became chic .However my lasting memory will be his all consuming antisemitism. His madness was no excuse .

I didn't like him in his latter years, but he meant so much to me that I can't even express it in words. Truly, a modern legend.

I was seventeen when Bobby played against Spassky. You have to be there -- during the "cold war" -- to really appreciate the 'American underdog" Bobby Fischer. Life is eternal! . . . just put the pieces back on the board. After all, it'll be a better place, Bobby.

He did more than any one else to popularise the game, especially through his match with Spassky in 1972. He had just found sanctuary in Iceland after many years on the run from the US Government. He was probably the greatest player of all time during his peak time. His death is a great loss to the chess world. May his soul rest in peace.

It does not matter what Bobby did or did not do in later life. Single handedly he beat the corrupt soviet chess machine. He was the greatest chess player who ever lived. His name will be remembered for that. he gave the chess world freedom.

Like many I got into chess in 1972 due to Fischer. Nobody ever played the game with as much clarity and simplicity as he did. He was the greatest player ever but the true tragedy are all the unplayed games after 1972.It is still a great joy to play over his games.

64 years old! That's one year for every square of the chess board. You were an amazing person who lived an extraordinary, and tumultuous life. You won't be forgotten. You were an inspiration to so many young chess players. God bless you Bobby.

A part of my youth died yesterday, Bobby Fischer, 64. Yes I know he was un-American and probably has been technically crazy for years, But. I have strong memories of his match long ago. He brought sanity to a crazy world of war. I remember getting up each afternoon and going to get "The Stars and Stripes" to see the match results. Everyone talked about chess. I have a strong memory of two guys sitting on the wall of a bunker dressed in jungle fatigues. M-16s at their sides playing over a game from the paper. Hopefully he is now rid of the demons whom seemed to have controlled his life.

Bobby Fischer put chess on the map in the USA. Unlike the previous methodical champions, Fisher took risks and experimented with unconventional defenses; his daring play created an aura of excitement; who can forget his Queen Sacrifice against Spasky. RIP Champ
