I would like to add what Ian Howard said of Mr Charles. When I was a 20 year old kid working at David Jones in 1967 I was sent to Expo '67 to work at the David Jones Australian Boutique in Montreal. Mr Charles summons me to his office for discussions. He handed me a $5 Canadian note and said it was some change that he had bought back from his recent North American trip. He was a wonderful man I know Ian (Howard) will support me when I say that we both owe a debt of gratitude to him.

I just found out the sad news. Mr Charles as he was affectionately known at DJ's extended his hand over and beyond his role as the Boss, when I at 21 decided to head overseas he somehow found out and mentioned when he toured the Market Street store one morning, 'i had better come over to his office and get a letter from him as an introduction to retailers in the USA and the UK" When I went to get the letter we chatted, he liked flags, knew a lot about them, and we spoke briefly about when I return to DJ's, there was always a job waiting for me. As I headed back to the Crystal dept, i paused to read his letter, the generosity of praise was enough to knock you over, you would have thought I was his son or at least a family member. More than generous were his words, for me a 21 year old kid, that was a remarkable act of humanity. I got to know Charles a bit when he made his morning tours as I had to greet him when he entered the crystal dept. as my boss Ken Duff was over seas for about 4 months, kind of neat for a 21 year old. Charles was always proper, I was always Mr. Howard, until the time I got the letter from him then I was Ian.He extended his hand and gave me a help in my life, thank you. Being thrust into the top slot when he was could not have been easy, but it seems to me he did a decent job. sad news to stumble across, condolences to all the family Ian

MY WIFE JOAN BROWN AND I HAVE BEEN RURAL NEIGHBOURS OF CHARLES FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS. WE ARE FORTUNATE TO OCCUPY A BEAUTIFUL AND GRACIOUS HOME WHICH WAS BUILT BY CHARLES WITH LOVING CARE IN 1982. LOCATED ON 220 HECTARE PROPERTY OF SPLENDID WOODED HILLSIDES WITH A VALLEY FLOOR OF PRIME PASTURE. DESIGNED BY ROGER CHARLESWORTH,THE HOME IS HIGH GEORGIAN AFTER THE STYLE OF EARLY COLONIAL ARCHITECT JOHN VERGE(1799-1861). IN 1995 CHARLES SOLD THE HOME TO US AND HE THEN MOVED TO A HOME HE BUILT ON A ADJOINING RURAL PROPERTY. WE HAVE BEEN FRIENDLY AND SUPPORTIVE NEIGHBOURS EVER SINCE. CHARLES WALKED HIS MUCH LOVED COCKER SPANIELS THROUGH OUR PROPERTY NEARLY EVERY DAY AND HIS WHIMSICAL GOOD HUMOUR WAS APPRECIATED BY ALL WHO CAME IN CONTACT WITH HIM. CHARLES HAS MANY CREDITS TO HIS NAME, BUT I BELIEVE IT IS REASONABLE TO SUGGEST THAT THE RURAL HOMESTEAD "SUMMERLEES" HE BUILT IN YARRAMALONG VALLEY, WILL RANG AMONG HIS FINEST ACHIEVEMENTS.

My wife Joan Brown and I have been rural neighbours of Charles for the last 15 years. We are fortunate to occupy a beautiful and gracious home which was built with loving care by Charles in 1982. The Home is located on a 220 hectare property of splendid wooded hillsides with a valley floor of prime pasture. Designed by Roger Charlesworth, the home is high Georgian after the style of early colonial architect John Verge (1788-1861). In 1995 Charles sold the home to us and he then moved to a home he built on an adjoining property. We have been friendly and supportive neighbours ever since. Charles walked his much loved Cocker Spaniels through our property nearly every day. His whimsical good humour was appreciated by us and all who came in contact with him. Charles has many credits to his name, but I believe it is reasonable to suggest that the rural homestead "Summerlees" he built in the Yarramalong Valley will rank among his finest achievements.

I was 17 years old when I first met Sir Charles at an informal dinner party held by his very close friend Alan Norris at Alan's Woollahra stunning 1800 cottage. Alan and Charles had been close for many years travelling the world and hosting fantastic parties in the late 60's and 70's. Sir Charles had a certain air that put even strangers at ease and his jovial personality and deep belly laughter made it a wonderful evening among friends and family that I have remembered for 34 years.

I WILL ALWAYS MISS HIS SMILE AND THE JOKES, WHEN I WENT TO CLEAN HIS HOUSE EVERY THURSDAY AT SUMMERLEES FARM, HE WAS MORE OF A FRIEND THEN A BOSS. I WILL TRULY MISS HIM. I HOPE SOMEONE WILL LOOK AFTER HIS DOGS NOW, HE LOVE THEM, I USED TO LOOK AFTER THEM FOR CHARLES WHEN HE WENT AWAY AND THEY ARE GREAT DOGS. I WILL NEVER FORGET HIM.
