This is a celebration of John Martin's life, and that he came into mine. I still remember the first day I walked into the Swedish Section at University of Melbourne in 1978, and John's infectious enthusiasm lured me in and changed my life. What a gifted teacher he was, and an inspiration! I know he has touched the lives of many people, and they feel the same gratitude that I do. It is sad that I haven't been able to see him for a long time, but it simply can't dampen the joy that I feel just thinking of him and what he has given me.

Dear Dr John Martin opened up a whole world for me and for many other students of Swedish that otherwise would have remained entirely closed. I came out of the the suburbs of the 1980s knowing nothing: I learned from him. My gratitude is immense. . . . allt suckar för Naturens lag. My sympathies to all his family in this very sad time. Oh John! I still hear your chuckling laughter in the Babel corridor, the shuffling of your feet that’s quickly coming near, your soothing voice through the opening of my door. I still see the curiuosity in your squirrel eyes so bright, and how the tales from gnomish grin your hand for me is stroking out of Old Norse beard to Aussie light. I still feel your verbal arms embrace, a paternal patting on my back and I can’t conceal the blush your inspiration leaves upon my face. Tonight I’ll light a candle whispering my ode. It will flicker in the Swedish wind and snow, fluttering a tiny message of my gratitude Across the sky for your Nordic soul to know. Bengt Karlsson, colleague & Swedish tutor 1979-81.

John was the best and most enthusiastic teacher I have ever encountered. His energy for the Swedish language and all things Svensk was contagious and spread rapidly among his students. I am sure everyone who met John would have been touched by his generosity of spirit and positive outlook. I will always remember him with admiration and fondness. My deepest sympathy to his family. Zena Roslan (student of the mid 70's)
