It is amazing reading the testamonials and memories to date, it is obvious Lionel has shared his large but modest character with many people. My memories of Lionel are similar to many guys from North Shore Bears/Bombers. He had a way of making me feel like a superstar, he wrote articles, interveiws, notes, games played, every stat an amateur club could have counted. In my early days he presented medals to players at presentation night, and had many a banner or posting in the rooms on game day. It wasnt till Lionel stepped away from his club duties did i realise how much work and effort he put in. It is unfortunate that we dont appreciate these things about people until they are gone, but more importantly we will remember them forever going forward.....

At one of Lizzie''s many family dinners that I attended,Lionel kept me so mesmerised by the stories that he told I could have listened all night, but it was getting late and Marie said they had to go home. Also Lionel sitting in McDonalds at Beacon Hill having breakfast with his race form and all his bits of paper and I would ask Lizzie how does your father get a hot apple pie for breakfast and we would have a laugh.

My memories of the North Shore Football Club are based on the people that you meet and the friendships that are made, there are always a few people that leave a lasting impression and Lionel was certainly one of those. It was a change to come to Sydney and find a person with the passion for the game that Lionel had. In my time at North Shore I cannot remember one bad word coming from Lionel and certainly never one aimed at him, his knowledge and recall of all those that played at North Shore always astounded me. He will be sadly missed . The final siren has sounded but the memories will continue.

Lionel Beale is someone I met late in his life through my friendship with Lizzi. He was passionate about reading and lent me many books over a short time. Always one for a joke and a friendly word. Rest in Peace Lionel.

Lionel Beale was a true gentleman of the game. One of my first memories of North Shore was entering the change rooms at Gore Hill and seeing hand written signs of players achieving games played milestones. It seemed every week we had a player to recognise and I was always amazed and grateful for how Lionel was able to keep records of games played all the years he was around the club. In my time as President, I used to receive a weekly call from Lionel telling me about an upcoming milestone or if there was anything he could discuss on his weekly radio show. He would always ask how my family was and every year, without fail, I would receive a Christmas card from him. We have lost a great man in Lionel Beale. I am grateful though that Lionel was able to see the success of North Shore over the past 10 years. He will remembered forever and his contribution recognsised through the Lionel Beale Perpetual Award at the club. Thanks Lionel, we will miss you old mate. Duck

A request has been received from the Beale family that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Northshore Football Club (BSB 062 151 A/C # 10119828) for the Lionel Beale U18 Scholarship that will be awarded at our presentation evening later in the year. When making your donation please include your name and LBS in the description area. This scholarship will be a one time memorial to Lionel and the Lionel Beale Perpetual Trophy will continue annually in his honour.

We knew Lionel as a Dad to Lizzie, Father In Law to Phil and Poppa to Robbie. We remember him at one of the many parties we attended always happy and laughing at his jokes and stories but mainly as a very kind and gentle man. Rest peacefully you wonderful man.

It seems like yesterday (1987) I walked into North Shore changing room as a nervous 17 year old. Looking lost and for somewhere to throw my bag I was cornered by Lionel. He sat me down, got his note pad out and to my amazement, interviewed me. Moral of the story - When someone makes you feel important you remember them. Thanks Lionel.

I first remember meeting Lionel as a 15 year old playing footy with Forest and Lionel was the time keeper for Seaforth - back in 1979. Over the next 15 years or so I was privileged to get to know Lionel and build a great friendship through the North Shore bears. He was a great adviser, supporter and friend to me with my football career and we shared many a laugh over these years. Im sure he may have let the game go on for the odd few seconds here and there if ever we were making a late charge for victory. His writings in the Manly Daily provided great coverage and promotion for AFL and the Bears and my Mum still has most of these clippings from the 80's. I am very grateful to Lionel for all of his support. He was a most kind and generous man. RIP LB. You have been one of the true champions in my life.

As a student nurse recently working at Manly Hospital Lionel was the first patient I visited when my shift began and the final patient I said goodbye to in the afternoon. I know professionally we arent supposed to have favourites but...sometimes you just can't help it. Lionel may not of been at his best when I nursed him but the wit and charm that came from his mouth was certainly some of the best I've heard from a patient. I learnt more about AFL in those two weeks than I have in my entire 23 years. I was saddened to read of Lionels passing in the paper but hope you can take comfort in knowing that even in his last few weeks Lionel was still making big impressions on people. His kind demenour and twinkle in his eyes leave me in no doubt that he was a fine man with a life well lived. Lionel was one of the few patients that made a lasting impression on me and I have no doubt I'll remember him for all my years of nursing to come.

Your sarcasm and dry sense of humour and of course your home veggie garden at Seaforth, especially the lovely cauliflowers that I used to get off you.

For some 14 years Lionel presented Aussie Rules news on 2NSB FM's Sports Saturday program (or as it sometimes seemed "The Lionel Beale Show"). At 8.05am almost every Saturday he reviewed the Friday night AFL game, caught up with the big news in AFL and gave the listeners the good oil on his beloved North Shore. Regretably he also gave his racing tips. Lionel's unique style and old fashioned comments on the football were always a hit with the listeners as was his banter with presenters Pete, Dave and especially his St Kilda sparring partner, Lucien. No matter how hard we tried to get him to conform to the show's time slots, he would never be put off from getting his points across - ALL his points. And woe betide anyone who tried to stop him. Whenever the Show's listeners talked about the Show they invariably referred to that terrific old bloke who did the Aussie Rules. He was the star of the Show.
