I have been an old family friend of the Bertei's for around 30 years, having been a freind to Frank since our high school days.
The most time I spent at once in the company of Marco was when he invited me to come with himself, Jenny, Frank and Lyndal on a driving holiday that took in the ACT and NSW snowfields. Me and Frank must've been around 16 or 17 at the time.
It's at that time when I learned some of the same traits as so many people also know about Marco... We were drove into a National Park a few times and on the second visit, on the same day, the ranger at the gate wanted to charge Marco an extra 5 cents. Bad idea!! Marco went on ad-infinitum about how it had been 5 cents less the day before. The girl said it was not her decision and that the price had only increased 5 cents. Marco told her with great gusto that he was not worried about the money, just the principal that it was 5 cents more on the same day! With Marco at the helm, we all went on to continue what was a great "family" holiday.
As was the theme throughout his eulogies, Marco was known as a man of the utmost principals and integrity and from my experiences in his company, I know this to be true. In the years that I knew him, I always found Marco to be a welcoming, approachable straight up sort of bloke. Frank is the same, so at least some of that good stuff must've rubbed off!
Marco has now been welcomed into the Halls of the Great Dads that have gone before him.
RIP Marco Bertei
