My memories of Tom are obviously strongly associated with our walking trips to Tasmania. I was still a teenager (19) & he must have been about 45 at the time. I recall thinking that for an old fellow, Tom was alright & I hoped that by the time I got to his age I would have the fitness & attitudes that he had. I remember visiting him on a number of occasions, eating, drinking red & smoking cigars!! He introduced me to the concept of cooking, eating & drinking fine food & wine with friends & I

I think my memory of Tom can be summed up by an impression I have of him on some bushwalk somewhere, it might have been in Ettrema at the junction of Jones & Ettrema. He made a billy of coffee. Throwing some grounds into the billy. he picked it up & took a long deep breath. His expression and comment was as though he had this sudden revelation of the meaning of life. It wasn

My first adventure with Tom was a memorable, very successful traverse of the Western Arthur Range in SW Tasi 1975. Peter, Paul, Steve and Tom made this stranger feel welcome. Our next meetings were the inevitable slide show at Tom

Both Henry and I had the highest regard for Tom. Tom and Henry shared so many wonderful trips, memories and photos. I expect they are off skiing again now! Henry had such admiration and confidence in Tom's navigation: in a white out" Tom was "spot on" as Henry would say."

I have this enduring memory of watching Tom and Ann produce this bottle of beer at lunchtime to share. My group was envious! We only had water.

Tom's memory willl live on in his wonderful contribution to NPA for so many years. I have this enduring memory of watching Tom and Ann produce this bottle of beer at lunchtime to share. My group was envious. We only had water.

Tom was a strong and knowledgable bush walker and a gentle man with a wonderful sense of humour.

When we think of Tom, we remember his graciousness and how he always thought it was noble to carry a heavy pack

I worked with Tom in the NPA office when he used to come in volunteering. I absolutely loved and looked forward to the days that Tom would come in, and I hope he got something useful out of it too. He was a wonderful and beautiful human being

Tom had a contagious sense of humour, a generous nature, love of the outdoors, courage, leadership, decisiveness to name but a few of his attributes. Tom was a remarkable man in many ways. Knowing him, I am well aware of the difference he made in the lives of many people, both here and in Australia. He will be missed by many.

I fondly remember Tom from NPA slide nights in the early 1980s. I'll be skiing in the Grey Mares on Friday, but will commemorate Tom through a minutes silence and contemplation during my trip.

Another image is of Tom making ground coffee (Blue Mountain was a favorite), as was his wont on almost every bushwalk. Boil the water in a billie, add the grounds, wait a few minutes, and then swing the billie round and round in large armlength arcs (trusting in centrifugal force that the whole lot would not gush out onto the ground), until theoretically the coffee grounds sank to the bottom - we used to call it spitting coffee", since not all of the grounds ever did sink to the bottom, and we had to use our teeth to sieve them out, with appreciative "ptui-ing" all round. Nevertheless, the ar"

I remember Tom carrying his 85-pound rucksack towards the Western Arthurs in Southwest Tassie, and on his chest a daypack weighing about 25 pounds just for his camera gear - now that's dedication! How he managed to carry all that stuff through extremely difficult and often dangerous terrain is beyond my comprehension. I would certainly not have attempted it, and if I had, I would not have been so spectacularly successful. Take that expression of admiration from someone who then somewhat arrogantly felt that photography was an interference with the genuine experience of being in the wilderness

I only met Tom on a handful of occasions but he was a true gentleman and one of my favourites (sorry Ann). He brought such a sparkle to the life of my long term friend and bridesmaid, Ann. I only regret that their time together was so short. Bye Tom.

My memories of Tom are mainly centred around schooldays in Grenfell. We were privileged to grow up there. Halcyon days! I remember one occasion Tom and I were out in the bush and we decided to cook breakfast: we made omelettes from hundreds of sparrows
